God’s blessings are not temporary
When we receive something we’ve earned through our own efforts, the world can attach strings to it. We may think we’ve succeeded when we’re finally able to afford the luxury car we’ve been wanting, the expensive resort home by the lake, or that big diamond ring for our wife. But cars can be repossessed, homes can go into foreclosure, and if we hit hard times financially, we may have to sell the ring. Trusting in the world’s co-called “blessings” can be unsettling, but God’s blessings can’t be reversed.
Seeking stability in the stock market, a big bank account, or financial investments can seem like a good idea at the time, but it can all shift and disappear in the blink of an eye. God loves us and wants us to benefit from the true wealth resulting from His eternal blessings, if only we accept them. Being born again and accepting His grace is a step in the right direction. When we believe in the blood sacrifice Jesus made for us, we become righteous and holy in God’s eyes.
In the Old Testament, the children of Israel were told to burn regular sacrifices on the altar to atone for their sins, but the Scriptures foreshadowed Jesus’ perfect sacrifice thousands of years later. “For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.…But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God.…For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified (Hebrews 10: 1-3, 12, 14).
The message here is that God never counts our sins against us or cuts us off from Him. Things aren’t always what they appear to be to the human eye, but sometimes we make the mistake of doubting God’s love when our sins block His abundant blessings for us. There’s no power in the universe that can take away the blessings of grace, abundant life, victory, peace, prosperity, joy, and happiness that God has already set aside for us. Jesus’ blood washed away our iniquities thousands of years ago, and God now sees us through the blood of His Son.
What we try to accomplish on our own can be undone, but there’s no undoing the debt Jesus paid for all time. Believing this connects us to God’s unconditional love and acceptance, and the blessings from Him that the world can’t take away. Our sins can’t stop God from loving us, or cause Him to revoke those blessings, but sin can bring on negative circumstances. We already have God’s blessings, but sin blinds us to that fact.
In ancient Israel, the Moabite king saw that the Israelites were expanding and growing stronger, because of God’s blessing on them. He tried to block that blessing by commanding Balaam, a prophet, to curse the Israelites. God sent an angel to block Balaam’s way, and Balaam acknowledged he couldn’t speak against Israel because no man can curse what God has blessed (Numbers 22: 1-41).
